The days are getting longer, the island is gearing up for summer, and the Back Kitchen is getting ready to open its doors for another season.
We’re deep in preparations for our 2026 season, and we’re excited to share that we’ll be reopening in May. We don’t have an exact date locked in just yet but keep an eye on our socials for the big announcement in the coming weeks.
For those who are new here: The Amherst Island Community Cafe (colloquially known as “The Back Kitchen”) is a volunteer-led, not-for-profit restaurant located on beautiful Amherst Island. As the island’s only restaurant, we serve as a vital community hub that brings people together over fresh, locally made food in a safe, welcoming space.
We’re Hiring - Join Our 2026 Team
We’re looking for enthusiastic, community-minded people to join our café team this season. Café Staff work across all aspects of our operation - kitchen, front of house, customer service, and more!
No experience necessary - just a willingness to learn, a team-first attitude, and a commitment to great customer service. This is a wonderful opportunity for local students and anyone looking to build real kitchen and hospitality skills.

Support The BK Before We Open
As a volunteer-run, seasonally operated restaurant, we face real startup costs every spring before a single meal is served. One of the best ways you can help is by purchasing a Back Kitchen gift card in advance - it gets money flowing into the café early, and you’ll have something to look forward to (or share with someone special) once we’re open.
Events On Amherst Island
Spring and summer on Amherst Island are full of community events, and we want to help you find them. Our website has an event calendar - it’s still filling up for the season, but check back often as we’ll be adding more events throughout spring and summer.
Do you have an event to promote? If you’re organizing something on the island and would like it listed, get in touch with us - we’d love to help spread the word.
