The Back Kitchen is Staying Open Until Thanksgiving!

We have some exciting news to share. The Back Kitchen will remain open through the fall season until Canadian Thanksgiving. In past years, our season ended just after Labour Day, but thanks to the addition of our full-time chef and manager, we’re able to keep the doors open a little longer.

Fall hours begin Thursday, September 4th:

- Thursday: 10 AM – 4 PM
- Friday to Sunday: 10 AM – 7 PM

Our menu and schedule may shift as the season unfolds, but we’re committed to providing good food and a gathering place for the community as long as we can.

This extended season is only possible because of the mutual support between The Back Kitchen and our island community. By dining with us this fall, you’re helping sustain Amherst Island’s only restaurant through part of the off-season months.

Thank You for Another Incredible Season of Summer Sunday Dinners

As we wrap up the 2025 season, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this summer’s Sunday Dinners at The Back Kitchen such a success.

These dinners have become a beloved Island tradition as a way to gather, try new flavours, and celebrate the incredible talent in our community. This year, every single dinner sold out, and each one featured delicious, home-cooked meals prepared by volunteer guest chefs who donated the proceeds back to The Back Kitchen. We’re blown away by the generosity and support.

Here’s a full recap of this season’s Sunday Dinner lineup:

July 13 - Tim & Cat’s Spaghetti & Meatballs

We opened the season with Tim Miller, Cat Feraday Miller & Ray Feraday, serving Tim's Gramma Chick’s spaghetti and meatballs, Cesar salad with Cat’s homemade dressing, garlic bread, and tiramisu for dessert. A hearty, nostalgic favourite that set the tone for a stellar summer.

July 20 - Chef Terry’s Lemon & Rosemary Chicken

Our own Chef Terry stepped into the spotlight with a summery menu featuring lemon and rosemary chicken (or portobello mushrooms), rustic roasted potatoes, garden-fresh green beans, salad, and dessert.

July 27 - Chef Larry Jensen’s European-Inspired Feast

Larry brought bold, Mediterranean flavours with an authentic Greek salad, Pasta Aglio Olio with prosciutto and fresh basil, and those unforgettable Portuguese custard tarts for dessert.

August 3 - Mallory & Vaib Gupta’s Indian Dinner

Mallory and Vaib returned with a crowd favourite: handmade miniature samosas with mint chutney, classic Indian butter chicken over basmati rice, and gulab jamun to sweeten the finish. This one sold out fast.

August 10 - Chef Terry’s Caribbean BBQ

Back by popular demand, Terry served jerk chicken or mushroom skewers, paired with charred corn salad, roasted potato wedges, and grilled pineapple upside-down cake. A perfect blend of spicy and sweet.

August 17 - Sheila Mooney & Laura Warren’s Vegan-Friendly Curry Night

Sheila and Laura served a comforting and flavourful vegan meal: sweet potato, lentil, and kale curry (kale optional!), rice, cucumber salad with yogurt, and ginger molasses cookies for dessert.

August 24 - Celebrating the Women’s Institute

We took a break from dinner service this week to join in the 125th Anniversary Celebration of the Amherst Island Women’s Institute, who hosted a free family picnic and pig roast at the Ag Pavilion.

August 31 - Paul Phillipson & Jill Finney’s Indonesian-Inspired Finale

We closed the season with a beautiful tribute to The BamBoo - Toronto’s legendary Queen West restaurant. Paul and Jill served Indonesian chicken and veggie satays, shrimp chips with bamboo peanut sauce, coconut basmati rice, greens with grapefruit and ginger dressing, and a moist ginger spice cake to end on a high note.

To all of our incredible guest chefs - Tim, Cat, Terry, Larry, Mallory, Vaib, Sheila, Laura, Paul, and Jill - thank you! Your time, creativity, and generosity made this season truly special.

And to our community: thank you for showing up each week with open hearts and empty stomachs. We’re so proud of what this little Island kitchen continues to do - and we already can’t wait to bring Sunday Dinners back next summer.
