The museum is excited to kick off our 2026 season with a Back Room Talk on Friday, May 15 at 7:00.

“Yousuf Karsh: Image Maker”

Join Amherst Island-based curator and historian Melissa Rombout as she explores the life and career of legendary Armenian-Canadian portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002). From Winston Churchill to Andy Warhol, Queen Elizabeth II to Margaret Atwood, Alfred Hitchcock to Nelson Mandela, Karsh’s six-decade career produced a visual encyclopedia of the 20th century Western world.

Melissa will share her insights from her new book Yousuf Karsh: Life & Work (Art Canada Institute, 2025) about Karsh’s artistic and technical choices, and offer a fresh perspective on the significance of his distinctive and dramatic style in the age of the selfie.
